Hamden Woman Involved in Fatal Pedestrian Crash

A pedestrian was struck in New Haven while she was standing in a sidewalk, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Police have identified the fatal pedestrian victim in Tuesday's crash as Melissa Tancredi, 42, of Waterbury.

Tancredi was on the sidewalk near South Frontage Road and York street when she was struck by a vehicle operated by Agnese Izzo, 29, of Hamden, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

Passerby who were medical professionals tried to render aid to Tancredi along with hospital staff, but she passed away.

Izzo has cooperated with investigators.

"Izzo was operating her car in the leftmost lane of South Frontage Road," Hartman said. "Her lane is a left turn only lane that does not continue (ahead) beyond the intersection. Despite traveling in the left turn only lane, Izzo continued straight. He car jumped the curbstone, continued a few feet, struck the pedestrian and then a lamp post and the corner of the air-rights garage."

The department's Crash Reconstruction Unit is working to analyze evidence, which includes video of the crash.

The investigation will likely take a week or more.

"In such cases, charges would only be filed after the investigation has concluded," Hartman said.
