Heroes Tunnel Renovation Public Hearing
The state has approved $200 million to fix and expand the West Rock tunnel on the Merritt Parkway.

HAMDEN, CT – A public hearing on the “Heroes Tunnel” Wilbur Cross Parkway building project is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 18th at Hamden Town Hall.
State Department of Transportation officials will be on hand to discuss the project – beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Residents, commuters, business owners and other interested individuals are encouraged to attend the meeting to discuss plans for the tunnel that passes through parts of Hamden, new Haven and Woodbridge.
The tunnel, previously known as the West Rock Tunnel, is a 1,200-foot-long twin-tube tunnel. It was renamed the Heroes Tunnel in 2003 to honor “heroes of all kinds” in the post-9/11 era/

In 2015, the state of Connecticut approved $200 million to fix and expand the tunnel, which includes adding a third tube.
Structural and draining deficiencies along with general deterioration and other substandard characteristics necessitate either tunnel rehabilitation or replacement.
The tunnel handles approximately 71,000 vehicles daily.
