HAMDEN, CT — A homeowner was treated for smoke inhalation after evacuating his family and attempting to extinguish an early morning fire with a fire extinguisher on Hartford Turnpike in Hamden. The family of five was displaced as a result of the fire, which firefighters had under control shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in the 500 block of Hartford Turnpike at 5:43 a.m. and reported smoke coming from the front door with fire breaking through a window in the front of the home, according to Deputy Chief Gary Merwede.

“It was determined that all family members has successfully exited the home prior to arrival,” Merwede said in a press release. “The fire was declared under control at 6:06 a.m. by Battalion Chief Ronald Desroches and was confined to the room of origin. Heat and smoke damage were evident throughout the ranch style house.”

The homeowner evacuated his wife, daughters (ages 15 and 10) and elderly father and attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher, according to Merwede.

“Heat and smoke made this impossible, and he was treated on scene for smoke inhalation but declined transport to a hospital,” Merwede said. “There were no other injuries reported.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the displaced family will be staying with relatives during repairs to their home.
