Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is impacting Hamden.

HAMDEN, CT — The new coronavirus outbreak in Connecticut and across the nation is having vast impacts in Hamden, including the closure of schools and many businesses.

The number of cases of the illness caused by the virus, known as COVID-19, continue to rise and additional measures and closures continue to be announced. The governor has declared a 'Stay Safe, Stay Home' program. All non-life-sustaining businesses in Connecticut have been closed.

As of Friday, there were 1,291 positive cases of coronavirus in Connecticut, including 11 confirmed cases in Hamden. A total of 27 people in Connecticut have died as a result of COVID-19.

Hamden officials have taken several steps to mitigate the spread of the new coronavirus. All Hamden basketball and tennis courts are closed. This is in addition to the closure of all town playgrounds/playscapes and the Hamden Dog Park.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the parks and open spaces in Hamden.

Hamden Mayor Curt Balzano Leng has been imploring residents to "get serious" about making positive healthy steps regarding the pandemic. Last week, Leng ordered the basketball and tennis nets taken down after seeing too many people and close-contact sports taking place on the town’s courts.

Hamden schools

Schools will remain closed until at least April 20 per Gov. Ned Lamont's executive order. Hamden Public Schools will begin online learning the week of March 30. Chromebooks have been distributed this week to middle school and high school students who need devices. They will be distributed to elementary students on March 30 and 31.
