Man, 74, On Mobility Scooter Killed In Crash: Hamden Police
The accident occurred in front of the local library, police say.

HAMDEN, CT — A 74-year-old local man, who was riding a mobility scooter, was killed after being struck by a car in front of the library on Sunday, police said. An off-duty State Trooper who was in the area, rushed to provide medical treatment to the man.
Robert Sheard, 74, of Hamden was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he later died, police said. At 1 p.m. Sunday, police responded to the main entrance/exit of the Miller Memorial Library, 2901 Dixwell Avenue, on a report of a motor vehicle accident, involving a mobility scooter, police said.
Investigation revealed that Sheard was crossing Dixwell Avenue in his mobility scooter, in front of the library. Sheard, who was not in a crosswalk, was struck by a motor vehicle that was traveling westbound on Dixwell Avenue, police said. The motor vehicle was operated by a 69 year-old Middletown resident.

Sheard was thrown from his mobility scooter, police said. An off-duty Connecticut State Trooper arrived at the scene immediately after the crash. He promptly rendered medical assistance, until the arrival of Hamden Fire Rescue, police said. Sheard died at the hospital.
