Man Assaults Girlfriend, Found With Drugs: Hamden Police

Police say the man is accused of assaulting his girlfriend during an argument and was later found to be in the possession of drugs.

HAMDEN, CT — A Hamden man faces several charges after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and was later found to be in the possession of drugs. Police responded to a Hamden home at about 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 19 on the report of a domestic dispute, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said investigation revealed that Jacob Onativia was involved in a verbal dispute with his girlfriend that turned physical. Onativia is accused of assaulting his girlfriend, striking her in the face with an “open hand” and pushing her to the ground, according to Smith.

Smith said the violence continued when Onativia broke the window of the victim’s motor vehicle. Further investigation led to a search of Onativia’s bedroom where police found two bags of cocaine (32.1 grams), marijuana (4.5 grams) and drug paraphernalia, according to Smith. Onativia, 26, of Winnett Street in Hamden, was charged with third-degree assault, disorderly conduct, third-degree criminal mischief, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. Onativia, who was released after posting a $5,000 bond, was scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court today (Aug. 20).
