Man Charged With Choking, Assaulting Girlfriend: Hamden Police

HAMDEN, CT — A New Haven man is accused of assaulting his girlfriend in Hamden this past weekend, according to police. NBC Connecticut reports the man, George Chin, is a New Haven firefighter and has been placed on administrative leave.

The incident was reported to Hamden Police at about 5:15 p.m. on April 28 and investigation revealed that the 25-year-old female victim had been involved in a verbal dispute with her boyfriend, Chin, in a parking lot on Whitney Avenue, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

“While the female was seated inside of her vehicle, Chin opened the driver’s side door, ‘reached into the car’ and ‘choked’ her,” Smith wrote in a press release. “Chin then ‘mush slapped’ her on the right side of her face. He then proceeded to open the door a second time and pour a cup of juice on her. The victim subsequently left the area and drove to her residence.”

Moments later, the victim told police that Chin responded to her residence and attempted to force entry through a bedroom window. The victim then allowed him inside where Chin allegedly struck her in the face with a pocketbook and a shoe, according to Smith.

Hamden Fire Rescue responded and treated the victim for injuries to her “left cheek bone” and the “base of the front of her neck,” according to Smith.

New Haven Police then responded to Chin’s residence in New Haven and detained him until Hamden Police arrived.

Chin, 30, was arrested on charges of second-degree strangulation, third-degree assault, second-degree disorderly conduct and third-degree criminal mischief. Chin, who was released after posting a $1,000 bond, was scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on April 30.
