Man Steals $200 In Candy, Fights With Store Manager: Hamden PD

Police say the man attempted to 'punch' and 'bite' the store manager while trying to steal $200 worth of candy.

HAMDEN, CT — A New Haven man was arrested after police say he attempted to “punch” and “bite” a store manager while trying to steal $200 worth of candy from a grocery store in Hamden. Police responded to Save-A-Lot Food Store, located at 1125 Dixwell Ave., at about 6 p.m. on April 7 on the report of shoplifting, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Angel Vega, 48, is accused of attempting to leave the store with $200 worth of candy and was confronted by the store manager, according to Smith.

Smith said Vega attempted to “punch” and “bite” the store manager and both fell to the ground during a physical struggle. Vega then ran from the scene, southbound on Dixwell Avenue, according to Smith.

Moments later, Officer Paul Calamita arrested Vega in the vicinity of Dixwell Avenue. Vega, of Grand Avenue in New Haven, was charged with third-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny. He was detained at police headquarters on a $10,000 bond. Vega is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on April 18.
