New Details Released In Fatal Shooting In Hamden: Police

In response to reports of a "delayed response" to a fatal shooting Saturday in Hamden, police released a timeline of the sequence of events.

HAMDEN, CT — In response to reports of a “delayed response” to a fatal shooting Saturday in Hamden, police on Monday released a timeline of the sequence of events.

Kaymar Tanner, 22, of Hamden, was struck by gunfire while driving at the intersection of Newberry Street and Winchester Avenue around 6 p.m. on Saturday. The car continued west on Newberry Street, across Newhall Street, before going through a fence, adjacent to 550 Newhall Street, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Tanner received medical assistance at the scene and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Smith.

Police found that an 18-year-old woman was a passenger inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting, Smith said on Monday.

An autopsy on Tanner was performed Sunday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington and Hamden police are awaiting the results. New Haven police are assisting Hamden police with the investigation, according to Smith.

“It has been reported by a news outlet and on some social media sites that Hamden Police and Fire Department had a delayed response to this incident,” Smith said in a news release.

Smith released the following breakdown of the sequence of events:

5:59:41 – Hamden Central Communications received a 911 call from a female caller reporting that a person had been shot in the area of the “old middle school.”

5:59:46 – Hamden Central Communications received a second 911 call, while speaking with the initial female caller. This call was transferred to Hamden Central Communications by the New Haven Police Department Dispatch Center.

6:00:15 – Hamden Police Officers were dispatched to the shooting. Officers assigned to several different sectors were dispatched to respond to the incident.

6:01:26 – Another call was transferred to Hamden Central Communications from the New Haven Police Department Dispatch Center. As the male caller was speaking with a Central Communications Technician, he stated at 6:02:16, that 2 Hamden officers had arrived. In addition, the Hamden Police Department’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), indicates that the first officer arrived at the scene at 6:02.

6:02:20 – Hamden Central Communications notified Hamden Fire Rescue and American Medical Response to respond.

6:03:13 – Hamden Fire Rescue advised that they were en route to the shooting.

6:05:19 – Hamden Fire Rescue reports arriving at the scene.

6:16:12 – Hamden Police and Fire Rescue personnel follow American Medical Response to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

6:23:22 – Hamden Fire Department clears the scene. Hamden Police remain on the scene for several hours.
