New Haven Man Charged With Robbery, Burglary In Hamden: Police

The incident occurred Friday on Mix Avenue, according to authorities.

HAMDEN, CT — A 50-year-old New Haven man was arrested on robbery and burglary charges Friday following an armed robbery on Mix Avenue in Hamden, according to police.

Calvin Sherman, of Orchard Street, was charged with the following:

  • Third-degree robbery
  • Third-degree burglary
  • Third-degree assault
  • Fifth-degree larceny
  • Interfering with a police officer
  • Engaging an officer in a pursuit
  • Operating an unregistered motor vehicle

The incident began at about 8:30p.m. when Hamden police received a report of a fight in progress that was updated to a "robbery with a firearm." One person told police that they had been assaulted, and that the suspect drove off in an older model Nissan.

"Shortly thereafter, Detective Mark Sheppard observed the vehicle traveling southbound on Dixwell Avenue," said Hamden police. "Officers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, however, the operator, Calvin Sherman, failed to comply. Sherman subsequently struck a snowbank at the intersection of Goodyear Street and Read Street. He immediately fled on foot."

Det. Sheppard and Officer Scott Jason eventually caught Sherman near Huntington and Butler streets. A firearm was not found, but Sherman had a knife on him when he was caught.

"Further investigation revealed that while at Mix Avenue, Sherman illegally entered a storage unit and stole tools, valued at approximately $500.00," Hamden police added.

Bond information for Sherman was not immediately available, but he is scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on Feb. 12.
