Obituary: Judith Gran, 88, of Hamden

Judith was a Literacy Tutor at Hamden elementary schools and was a sweet soul, a loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother.

Judith Gran, 88, of Hamden, sadly passed away on Sept. 8, 2016. Judith was born and raised in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York. She is survived by her loving daughters, Suzan and Laurie, her loving son, Neal, her loving son-in-law, Gino, and her loving grandson, Leo, and is predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Laurence.

After having raised her family, on Long Island, New York, she returned to school and received her masters and became a CSW (Clinical Social Worker). She spent many years helping adults and young people through difficult times in their lives.

In 2003 Judy (as she was known to her close friends and acquaintances) moved to Hamden, CT in order to live with her daughter. She retired when traveling to New York, in order to continue seeing clients, became too arduous a task.

After retiring, at a time in her life when she had every right to relax, she made the choice to give back, and to a new community at that, as a Literacy Tutor! When asked, by the Director of Experience Corps (c/o the Agency on Aging) what she hoped to gain by joining this group, her answer was “…to add love to my life.”

She worked with children in the library and in local area schools and just loved it, and they loved her as well.
