Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Berezecky, 64, of Hamden

She was accepted into the Honors College at Southern Connecticut State University when she was in her 40s.

Mary Elizabeth Coughlin Berezecky, 64, of Hamden, passed away on Wed., March 28, 2018. She was born February 1, 1954 in Boston, MA. the oldest of 10 children and the daughter of Donald and Patricia Harty Coughlin. Mary had two children whom she cherished deeply; Michael A. Berezecky and Emily A. Berezecky. Mary was married to Mike Berezecky.

Mary had worked for Travelers Insurance Company throughout the 1970's and 1980's up until giving birth to her children. She was accepted into the Honors College at Southern Connecticut State University when she was in her 40s. The college experience not only changed her life, but it changed the lives of her children, too. Mary impressed upon her children just how important being educated could change one's life.

Mary was diagnosed with sarcoma cancer near the end of 2011. It certainly wasn't any easy battle, but she was strong willed and determined to press on. Her greatest love was her family who will cherish the precious memories. Mary was predeceased by her father Donald Coughlin and two nieces Megan McAuliffe and Kelly Coughlin. Mary is survived by her children, Michael A. Berezecky and Emily A. Berezecky of Hamden, and their father Mike Berezecky of Hamden. She is also survived by her mother Patricia Coughlin of Hamden, her brothers and sisters: Daniel Coughlin of North Haven, Jean and Dennis McAuliffe of Wallingford, Bill and Janet Coughlin of Hamden, Carol and John Sequino of Hamden, John and Nancy Coughlin of North Haven, Bob Coughlin and Elaine Scaglione of Hamden, Gerry and Nancy Coughlin of Tampa, FL., Donna Coughlin of Hamden, Tricia Coughlin of Oakland, CA. She is also survived by her many nieces and nephews for who she loved dearly.

Funeral from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden, Tuesday morning (April 3) at 9:30. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rita Church at 10:00. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to www.closertofree.com to help fund cancer research and patient care.
