Obituary: Reverend Daniel E. Johnson, 89, of Hamden

Father Johnson served as a co-pastor at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and was pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hamden for several years

The Reverend Daniel E. Johnson, 89, of Hamden died Saturday, Sept. 3,2016 in Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was born Oct.6,1926 in Bridgeport, CT a son of the late Daniel E. and Anne McGee Johnson, was a graduate of Central High School in Bridgeport and then went to St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT and Saint Mary Seminary in Baltimore, MD.

He was made a Prefect of St. Thomas Seminary in 1950 and was Ordained to the Priesthood on May 3, 1951 at St. Joseph Cathedral by his Excellency, The Most Reverend Henry J. O'Brien.

Father Johnson first assisted at the parishes of St. Patrick in Mystic and Ss. Peter and Paul in Waterbury until he was sent to the Catholic University of America for graduate work in 1956. He was appointed Director of the Diocesan Labor Institute, Sept. 12,1964, the 1st Vicar for Clergy of the Archdiocese of Hartford , Sept. 1,1970, Co-Pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Hamden in 1976 through 1982, Co- Pastor of St. George Church in Guilford in 1990, Assisting priest of St. Barnabas in North Haven in 1991, Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hamden in May of 1991 and Pastor Emeritus of Resurrection Parish in Wallingford in Jan. of 1994 and was named temporary administrator there in Feb. 1999.

He retired in Oct. of 2001, and resided in Resurrection Rectory in Wallingford until moving to Hamden for the last several years.

Apart from his priestly duties he was appointed to the State Board of Mediation and Arbitration in 1966 by then Gov. John N. Dempsey and served on that board for several decades. He was known as a passionate fan of Red Sox Baseball and Notre Dame Football.

Father Johnson is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) Koerwer of North Eastham, MA and Naples, FL and Mrs. Thomas (Miriam) Curnin of Larchmont, NY. Also 11 nieces and nephews, 30 great nieces and nephews, five great great nieces and his longtime caregiver Nancy Loiselle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 at 11:00am in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 2819 Whitney Ave., Hamden, CT with the Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair as the principal celebrant.

Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Straford, CT. Calling hours will be he held prior to the Mass on Sat. from 9:00 - 10:30 am at the church.
