Police Cracking Down On Distracted Driving In Hamden

Hamden Police announce the latest "U Drive. U Text. U Pay" campaign in which special patrols targeting distracted drivers will be deployed.

HAMDEN, CT — The Hamden Police Department is partnering with the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office as part of the “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign, which began Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 15. During that time, police will be looking for distracted drivers as part of a high visibility effort to enforce distracted driving laws.

“Texting and driving is a public safety crisis,” police said in a press release. “Our mission is to save lives and protect the public. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,450 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2016.

“The Hamden Police Department and the Connecticut Department of Transportation urge motorists to put the phone down prior to getting behind the wheel. If it’s absolutely necessary to talk on the phone or text, please park your vehicle in a safe location.”
