Life-Threatening Injury Reported In 3-Car Crash In Hamden

Three others were injured in the accident which began in North Haven as police pursued a stolen vehicle into Hamden, State Police said.

HAMDEN, CT — A reported stolen vehicle involved in a police pursuit beginning in North Haven crashed into two cars in Hamden on Dixwell Avenue early Tuesday and one person sustained life-threatening injuries, State Police said. Three others sustained minor injuries in the crash.

At 2:17 a.m. a 2012 Honda Pilot driven by Jonathan Garcia, 19, of Rowe Street in New Haven, was traveling southbound on Dixwell Avenue approaching the intersection with Woodin Street in Hamden. The Honda Pilot lost lateral stability and began to rotate in a clockwise manner, State Police said.

At this time, a 2004 Nissan Armada and 2018 Chevrolet Silverado were stopped on Dixwell Avenue at the intersection with Woodin Street for a traffic control signal, State Police said.

The Chevrolet Silverado was stopped in the left through lane and Nissan Armada was stopped in the right through lane. While stopped, the Honda Pilot's left side collided in the rear ends of the Chevrolet Silverado and Nissan Armada, State Police said.

Prior to the multi-vehicle accident, the Honda Pilot engaged North Haven Police in pursuit, State Police said. The pursuit originated on State Street in North Haven after Garcia failed to stop for police when signaled, State Police said.

The Honda Pilot was reported stolen from New Britain on Dec. 29, State Police said. As a result of the collision sequence, the left rear passenger of the Honda Pilot, Andrew Basilici, 25, of Dunn Road in Hamden, sustained life-threatening injuries, State Police said.
