Shop Rite Shoplifting Suspect Throws Plant Display, Injures Security Officer: Hamden Police

The 23-year-old woman is accused of throwing the display while trying to leave the store with stolen merchandise, according to police.

Hamden, CT — A shoplifting suspect is accused of throwing a plant display at Shop Rite security while exiting the store and injuring the loss prevention officer.

Hamden Police responded to the Shop Rite at 2100 Dixwell Avenue at about 5 p.m. on June 10 on the report of a robbery, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said investigation revealed that a loss prevention officer observed Alexis Hampton-McBride exit the store with stolen merchandise.

As the security officer attempted to detain Hampton-McBride, she threw a plant display at him, nearly striking him in the head, according to Smith.

The suspect subsequently fled from the store on foot.

The loss prevention officer sustained scratches on his chest and hand, according to Smith.

Smith said Hampton-McBride returned to the store shortly thereafter, at which time she was arrested.

Hampton-McBride, 23, of 49 St. Mary Street in Hamden, was arrested on charges of third-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny.

Hampton-McBride, who was released on a $10,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on June 23.
