Shoplifters Shove Stop & Shop Security, Flee Store: Hamden Police

The security officer was injured in the incident and the suspects were involved in a head-on crash and ran from the crash scene, police said

HAMDEN, CT — Police are asking for help with identifying two shoplifting suspects who are accused of knocking a security officer to the ground at Stop & Shop and later crashing head-on with another vehicle and leaving the scene. Police responded to Stop & Shop, located at 2335 Dixwell Avenue in Hamden, on Jan. 28 on the report of shoplifting, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said investigation revealed that two people attempted to exit the store with $323.43 worth of stolen merchandise. A Loss Prevention Officer “intervened and was subsequently knocked to the ground,” according to Smith. He suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for medical treatment, Smith said. The two suspects fled from the area in a Honda.

Moments later, the suspects were involved in a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Putnam Avenue and Newhall Street. Their vehicle struck another vehicle in a “head-on collision,” Smith said. The suspects promptly got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene, according to Smith.
