Sleeping Giant State Park Remains Closed Indefinitely

Officials update on a rough estimate of when Sleeping Giant will reopen after last week's tornado pummeled the beloved park.

HAMDEN, CT — Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden is expected to remain closed until the fall after last week’s tornado pummeled the beloved park and left it looking like a war zone. The Sleeping Giant Park Association announced on Facebook Monday morning that the estimated reopening of the park won’t be any time soon. An original post on the Facebook page said the park wouldn’t reopen until the fall but it has since been updated to say “A ROUGH guess as to re-opening ... not any time soon.” The association also reminded everyone that the trails are closed to the public, including the SGPA volunteer Trails Crew.

In a post on Facebook, the Sleeping Giant Park Association wrote “Even professional construction concerns brought in to consult are shaking their heads at the absolutely overwhelming task of cleaning up JUST the picnic and parking areas, and the Tower Path.

“WHAT can you do? RESPECT the signs that say CLOSED. State staff has their hands full with trying to get your park back to safe conditions. They are working for YOU. Please don't make them take time from their clean up efforts by distracting them with your presence!”
