Suspected Car Thief Arrested Following Foot Chase: Hamden Police

Police responded to a burglar alarm at a local service station and saw a vehicle that was reported stolen fleeing at a high rate of speed.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Police arrested a suspected car thief following a foot pursuit early Sunday morning.

Police responded to a local service station on the report of a burglar alarm at about 5 a.m. on Sunday, June 26, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

Moments later, Officer Kyle Sampognaro observed a motor vehicle fleeing at a high rate of speed on Morse Street, Smith said.

The vehicle eventually stopped on North Street, at which time the operator exited and fled on foot and was taken into custody after a foot pursuit, according to Smith.

Smith said further investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen three days earlier on Thornton Street in Hamden.

Malik Hanna, 19, of 148 Gorham Avenue, 1st floor in Hamden, was arrested on charges of first-degree larceny, interfering with a police officer, reckless driving, engaging an officer in pursuit and operating under suspension.

Hanna, who was detained on a $25,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on July 8.

The investigation is continuing, according to Smith.
