Trump Touts Quinnipiac Poll Economy Responses

The poll found that more people credited former President Barack Obama's policies for the current state of the economy.

HAMDEN, CT — President Donald Trump tweeted about the latest Quinnipiac University poll that found 66 percent of people feel the economy is in excellent or good shape.

"That is the highest number ever recorded by this poll," Trump said.

The question was first asked in 2001, according to the poll. However, the poll also found that 37 percent of voters say his policies are helping the economy, 29 percent that they are hurting it and 30 percent that his policies don't make much difference either way.

The poll also found that 49 percent of people credited former President Barack Obama with most of the responsibility for the state of the economy while 40 percent said Trump is more responsible.

"President Trump can hang his hat on the economy, but must share the hat rack with President Barack Obama, as two-thirds of the country see the economic picture as excellent or good," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

The same poll released Jan. 10. found that 39 percent of voters give him an "F" grade for his first year in office while 17 percent give him a "D." He got an "A" rating from 16 percent of voters, a "B" from another 16 percent and a "C" from 11 percent.

The poll also found that American voters say 53-44 percent that Trump is intelligent, 69 to 28 percnet he is not level-headed and 57 to 40 percent that he is not fit to serve as president. His job approval rating was 36 percent positive.

An open-ended question that asked voters to describe Trump's first year in office came back with mostly negative results. The poll found the following

  • 69 responses for "disaster"
  • 62 as "chaotic"
  • 44 as "successful"
  • 28 as "horrible"
  • 27 as "great"
  • 26 as "good"
  • 24 as "terrible"
  • 24 as "embarrassing"
  • 23 as "interesting"

Of the 43 words used at least five times 25 of them were negative, 10 were positive and eight were neutral.
