Trump's Approval Rating Drops Below Obama's Worst Levels: Quinnipiac Poll

52 percent of voters polled said they were embarrassed to have Trump as president.

HAMDEN, CT — President Donald Trump's approval rating dipped below President Barack Obama's worst ratings in the latest Quinnipiac University Poll.

Trump had a 35 percent approval rating in poll released Tuesday. Men disapprove 51 to 39 percent while Republicans approve 79 to 14 percent and white voters disapprove 48 to 43 percent. Obama's worst approval rating was 38 percent in 2013.

"President George W. Bush, who hit a negative 28 - 67 percent on May 14, 2008, had less support, but it took eight years, two unpopular wars and a staggering economy to get there," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

American voters' opinions of some of Trump's personal qualities are mostly negative:

  • 61 - 34 percent that he is not honest;
  • 55 - 40 percent that he does not have good leadership skills;
  • 57 - 39 percent that he does not care about average Americans;
  • 66 - 29 percent that he is not level-headed;
  • 64 - 33 percent that he is a strong person;
  • 60 - 35 percent that he is intelligent;
  • 61 - 34 percent that he does not share their values.

Still 52 percent of voters felt the American economy was in "excellent" or "good" shape and most voters, including Republicans felt that Obama was more responsible for the economy than Trump.

Republicans in Congress have a dismal disapproval rating of 70 percent, but Democrats in Congress aren't doing favorably among voters either with a 57 percent disapproval rating.
