Today's riddle: What do evil hens lay? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. GOP Senators Urge Action After Hartford Shooting (patch.com) — Hartford residents are grappling with renewed concerns about gun violence after a deadly shooting on Wethersfield Avenue killed a Newington man and injured four others. Six Republican state senators are pressing Gov. Ned Lamont's administration to boost support for the understaffed Hartford Police Department, urging tougher oversight of so‑called problematic businesses and more resources to keep city neighborhoods safe.
2. UConn Opens Downtown Hartford Residence Hall (patch.com) — Downtown Hartford is getting a boost as UConn opens its new Pratt Street Residence Hall, bringing about 200 students into the city's core. The converted office building, just blocks from the Hartford campus, adds classrooms, lounges and fitness space while putting students within walking distance of restaurants, shops and entertainment venues.
3. Saint Francis Hospital will bring more healthy food to North Hartford bodegas (ctpublic.org) — North Hartford residents could soon see healthier, more affordable options in their neighborhood bodegas thanks to a $275,000 grant backing a Saint Francis Hospital pilot project. The effort aims to turn local corner stores into reliable sources of fresh, culturally relevant foods, while working with the city on incentives and tapping programs like SNAP and WIC to keep prices accessible.
4. Hartford schools report record graduation rate, reading and math gains (wfsb.com subscription) — Hartford Public Schools are celebrating a record 85.3% projected graduation rate for the Class of 2025, alongside strong gains in reading and math across multiple grades. District leaders credit classroom-focused leadership, new literacy partnerships, and teacher retention efforts, but warn that Hartford's looming budget deficit could threaten the staff and tools driving these academic improvements.
5. Man arrested after loaded gun found during traffic stop (wfsb.com) — Hartford police arrested a 29-year-old man after finding a loaded semi-automatic handgun and high-capacity magazine in his vehicle during a traffic stop on Franklin Avenue. Officers say the driver was uncooperative before being detained, and he lacked a valid pistol permit. Residents with related information can contact the Hartford Police Department or submit anonymous tips to the city's tip line.
