1. Prominent Hartford Organization Awards $230K To Support LGBTQIA+ Community (patch.com) — Hartford's Greater Hartford Gives Foundation has awarded $230,000 to strengthen LGBTQIA+ services, with most of the funding going to six Hartford and West Hartford organizations. Grants will bolster youth support groups, health care access, arts and cultural projects, and community spaces, while also backing the 2027 SOGIEcon youth conference. The initiative follows a regional wellbeing study and expands the foundation's growing LGBTQIA+-focused philanthropy.
2. Abandoned Hartford school site could find new life as housing for veterans (nbcconnecticut.com) — Hartford officials just took the first step toward turning the long-abandoned Clark Elementary School site into more than 70 units of housing with support services for veterans. The Board of Education voted to transfer the North End property to the city so a nonprofit can pursue cleanup funding and redevelopment, potentially adding much‑needed, affordable homes for local veterans.
3. Hartford millennials are buying more homes than their peers in other CT cities, report finds (ctpublic.org) — Millennials in Hartford are now buying homes at one of the highest rates in Connecticut, with 56% owning rather than renting thanks to relatively affordable prices and solid white‑collar jobs. Local and state incentive programs like HouseHartford and Time to Own are helping first‑time buyers bridge down payments, suggesting recent public investments are reshaping who can afford to put down roots in the city.
4. Hartford fire displaces four families, no injuries reported (wfsb.com) — A fire on Affleck Street in Hartford Wednesday afternoon displaced four families, though firefighters reported no injuries. Crews quickly contained the blaze to a third-floor bedroom, and the Hartford Fire Marshal is investigating while the Red Cross helps nine displaced residents find temporary housing.
5. West Hartford Superintendent Announces New Principal for Morley School - We-Ha (we-ha.com subscription) — West Hartford families with children at Morley School will see a leadership change this fall, as Superintendent Paul Vicinus has appointed veteran educator Laura Meka as the new principal. She brings more than a decade of elementary principal experience and has already begun meeting Morley families ahead of the August 26 first day of school.
