Hartford Restaurant's Closing Timeline Is Clearer

Time is running out for one last meal at a well-known Hartford restaurant site that may eventually be home to a pot-growing operation.

HARTFORD, CT — Those looking for one final meal at a Hartford culinary institution only have about two months left to try and get one there.

After that, they wont be able to indulge their hunger pains, but they might be able to indulge in a new, recently legalized recreational drug there.

Over the weekend, the Chowder Pot of Hartford announced it was going to be officially closing at the end of March, with a specific day yet to be announced.

Last week, the well-known seafood and prime rib restaurant announced it was closing in the "coming months."

Since the announcement, the restaurant claims "there has been a lot of misinformation about when we are actually closing."

Located at 165 Brainerd Road, Hartford, the Chowder Pot of Hartford's been there since 1994, according to the owners, and that site has a long history in the local dining scene, as it first opened as a steakhouse in 1965.

Currently, it is known as a prime New England seafood, lobster and prime rib spot, a destination eatery that is a regular birthday, anniversary or holiday dining location.

But, the owners said, it is time to close the facility and sell it to a developer at that location.

Restaurant officials cited the building's age and costs associated with maintaining the building as one key reason for the impending closure.

According to the Hartford Business Journal, a Massachusetts firm called "Insa" has submitted plans to the Hartford Planning and Zoning Commission for a marijuana cultivation and retail operation.

Before marijuana can be grown and sold at the site, however, there's a lot of work to do first.
And, for at least two more months, folks can still enjoy a family meal there.

Restaurant officials said Saturday night that the output of well wishes has been large.

"The response and number of customers we have had since making the announcement has been more than we could have imagined," the Chowder Pot wrote via social media.

"We are extremely grateful for all the kind words and recommendations as to where we should go next."

Eating one last time at the Chowder Pot will require some customer patience, however, according to the restaurant.

"Our apologies to those that were not able to get a table the last few days or had to wait a long time for one," wrote the Chowder Pot.

"We will continue to do our best to staff and supple the restaurant to take care of all of you. We appreciate your support and understanding."
