United Way Awards Nearly $2 Million in Response to Community Needs

Hartford, Conn. (January 2023) — United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut awarded $1.9 million to support 56 programs across it’s region in response to the current pressing needs individuals and families are facing due to inflation and the ongoing economic impacts resulting from the pandemic.

“United Way is proud to provide funding to partner organizations that are addressing immediate needs in our community and are also working to provide the long-term opportunities needed for families to achieve financial security. These awards are made possible by the generous support of the corporate community, individual donors, foundations and groups like United Way Women United and members of the commercial real estate and building industries who come together through annual events to raise critical funds in support of financial security and homelessness prevention, respectively,” said Eric Harrison, President and CEO, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut.

“This year, volunteers who served on United Way Impact Teams played a significant role in determining funding for programs across our region. We are thrilled to be a volunteer-led organization and are grateful for those who joined us in this capacity in support of local children, adults and families,” added Harrison.

The annual awards, which were approved by United Way’s Executive Committee on behalf of the Board of Directors at its December meeting, include the following:
$1,029,000 to United for ALICE*, which helps families achieve financial security. Awards include a focus on connecting youth and young adults to workforce skill development and specific career training and increasing financial capability skills. Organizations receiving awards include:

$900,000 to Basic Needs, which supports programs that meet immediate needs of families for food, shelter, homelessness prevention, safety from domestic violence/sexual assault or disaster recovery; information and referral services through United Way 211; and, services for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
