Manchester Mourning Loss Of Longtime 'Dedicated' Police Officer
A Manchester police officer who served for nearly three decades is being remembered.

MANCHESTER, CT — Manchester is mourning the loss of retired Manchester Police Department veteran Susan Gibbens.
She was on the job from 1972 to 2000 and served several roles at the MPD, starting as a patrol officer and retiring as a lieutenant. She was a detective and also played a pivotal role in the Manchester Citizens Police Academy.
Law enforcement officials said he careers was an "esteemed" one.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Retired Lt. Susan Gibbens of the Manchester Police Department, who left us on May 5, 2024. Lt. Gibbens dedicated her career to serving our community, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.
"Lt. Gibbens began her esteemed career in February 1972, serving with unwavering dedication until her retirement in April 2000. Starting as a patrol officer, she swiftly rose through the ranks, showcasing her talent and commitment to excellence.
"In 1980, she was promoted to the rank of Detective, displaying remarkable investigative skills. Her promotion to Sergeant in 1991 further underscored her leadership skills and devotion to the Manchester community. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant in 1993, Lt. Gibbens continued to excel, serving in pivotal roles including Field Services Lieutenant, Administrative Support Lieutenant, and ultimately, Lieutenant Police Services. Her contributions were invaluable, shaping the very fabric of our department.
"Lt. Gibbens's dedication did not go unnoticed. In October 1996, she was honored with a Chief's Citation, recognizing her outstanding service. Additionally, in May 1999, she received a Certificate of Appreciation for her instrumental role in enhancing the educational experience of the Manchester Citizens Police Academy.
"With her guidance, the Citizens Police Academy was established in 1999, a program that continues to enrich our community to this day. Her legacy lives on through the lives she has touched.
"Lt. Susan Gibbens will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, co-workers, and all who had the privilege of knowing her during this difficult time.
"Rest in peace. Your service will forever inspire us."
