United Way of CT Welcomes Manchester Resident to Board of Directors
Chief William Darby, Chief of the Manchester Police Department, joins United Way of Connecticut Board.

United Way of Connecticut (UWCT) is thrilled to welcome Chief William Darby to its board of directors.
After serving with the Newington Police Department for 21 years, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant, Chief William Darby joined the Manchester Police Department in 2010 as a Captain. He was promoted to Deputy Chief in October 2017 and Chief in November 2018.
During his time with the Newington Police Department Chief Darby served as a Division Commander for the Patrol, Support Services and Detective Divisions. He was also the Commander for the Department’s Emergency Response Team.

At the Manchester Police Department, Chief Darby has served as the Commander of the Support Services, Field Services and Administrative Services Divisions. He has also served as the Team Commander of the Capitol Region Emergency Services Team.

We will be relying on his expertise in our crisis intervention work and our work in emergency/disaster response -- as part of Connecticut’s emergency response framework – to help us advance our mission to help the people of Connecticut thrive,” shares Lisa Tepper Bates, President and CEO of United Way of Connecticut.

A North Branford native and son of a state trooper, Darby is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Babson College Command Training Program. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Central Connecticut University and a master’s degree in criminal justice from American Military University.
“Law enforcement officers interact daily with people in their communities who are in need of services. As a board member of United Way of Connecticut, I’ll have a better understanding of all the programs that are available to people in my community and I can provide the Board with the law enforcement perspective of how some of the programs, such as 211, are working,” shares Darby.
Chief Darby lives with his wife in Manchester and is the father of four adult children.
