2-Alarm Fire Extinguished At Kleen Energy Plant In Middletown

Crews responded to the fire early Tuesday morning.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — No injuries were reported after an early Tuesday morning fire was extinguished at the Kleen Energy plant in Middletown, according to Mayor Dan Drew. Emergency crews responded to the plant, located at 1349 River Road, around 5 a.m. for a fire that was inside a wall.

The fire was in an “insulated area near the duct work adjacent to the turbines on the back side of the plant,” according to Drew. The South Fire District and state of Connecticut fire marshals are working together on determining the cause of the fire, Drew said.

“The plant was not operational at the time of the fire, though the turbines are slow to cool so remained hot for a while,” Drew said in a post on Facebook. “The plant is safe and the SFD and mutual aid companies did a great job knocking down the fire, which was inside the walls. No one was injured.”

“The fire was extremely difficult to access, and temperatures inside the plant are normally very warm, taking an additional toll on firefighters. Members operated for approximately 4 hours before turning the facility back over to Kleen Energy staff. Thanks to Durham Fire for covering our station!”
