Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation in Hartford and Middletown was awarded a $75,000 grant from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA) as part of its Not-for-Profit Grant Program.
CHEFA received 71 applications from nonprofit agencies for this program. Only 23 nonprofit agencies throughout the state were selected to receive a grant. A total of $1 million dollars was awarded to the 23 agencies. Recently, Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation was presented with a $75,000 check, the largest grant awarded by CHEFA.
The $75,000 CHEFA grant will be used to support Mercy’s two transitional housing programs: St. Elizabeth House in Hartford and Shepherd Home in Middletown; as well as the Friendship Center in Hartford. The focus of the grant request was on basic human needs; providing housing, food and medical services. Last year 5,480 people received services from the Friendship Center and 68,875 meals were served. In the transitional housing program, 316 homeless individuals were provided housing and support services.

Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1983 to respond to the needs of the homeless in Hartford and Middletown. Since its founding, thousands of individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of being homeless have been provided housing and support services.
“The goal of Mercy Housing and Shelter is to end homelessness. We are extremely happy to have CHEFA as a partner in that effort. Our programs enable homeless and chronically homeless persons the opportunity to get treatment, find employment, and move into permanent housing. We are grateful to CHEFA for walking with our clients on their journey out of homelessness,” said Sister Patricia McKeon, Executive Director of Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation.
