(Kristin Borden/Patch)

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The 2022 election is heating up in Connecticut and there are plenty of races with candidates eager to serve in elected office. Eyes are primarily focused on the gubernatorial election, but every state representative and senate seat is up for grabs. All five of Connecticut's congressional seats, plus one U.S. Senate seat, are up for grabs as well.

There are 151 seats in the state House of Representatives and 36 in the state Senate. Democrats currently hold majorities in both chambers

Connecticut Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near.

No

Previous public office, appointive or elective

I was elected by over 30,000 members of the American Federation of Teachers to be their President.

Why are you seeking this office?

My whole professional life I have fought for Connecticut's families, whether that be in a classroom, or as a union President. Running for State Senate is a natural extension of the advocacy I am already doing. I want to be able to make Connecticut a state where all of us are able to thrive.

Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ___, and this is what I intend to do about it.

The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is the economy. Almost every door I knock on people are talking about the high cost of groceries, gas, and they want assurance that these issues will be addressed. In my current position, I have fought for families and I hear the struggles that affect them everyday. As State Senator I will work collaboratively to ensure that our residents feel relief at the pump and in their pocketbooks. I will work to increase economic opportunity by bringing high-quality jobs and workforce development opportunities to Connecticut.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidate seeking this post?

The main difference between me and my opponent is that I am the only candidate who will fight to protect a woman's right to choose, fight to ensure Connecticut has world-class education, and ensure that healthcare is affordable and accessible. I have the demeanor and determination to stand up and fight for the residents of the 13th State Senate district. My experiences have uniquely qualified me for this position, and I believe that I am the best person for this job. There is so much at stake this election and it is imperative that the most qualified candidate is elected.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

There are plenty of issues that need to be addressed in the legislature. Cost of living being the most pertinent as I've discussed. I want the people of the 13th district to know their needs and concerns are not only heard, but addressed to the fullest extent. I want to ensure that women's rights stay protected. Men and women alike are nervous for the future, and what restrictions on reproductive healthcare might mean for their family planning. As a cancer survivor, I know especially how important it is for health decisions to be made between doctor and patient. In addition, I want to streamline workforce development in the state by ensuring that technical schools are adequately funded. Not everyone's path is the same, and that is why it's important that young people have every opportunity available to thrive. That in turn promoter's the state's economy and quality of life. Connecticut is a wonderful state with so much to offer. Everyone should be able to reap those benefits.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

In my current role as American Federation of Teachers, CT - I work with over 35,000 members. My members are comprised of nurses, healthcare professionals, educators, and public employees. The individuals that make up the membership of AFT, ARE the people of the 13th district. Additionally, this role has required me to collaborate with legislators on issues that my members face. I have firsthand experience and knowledge when it comes to the legislative process, and how to get meaningful legislation passed - such as Paid Family and Medical Leave. I believe I possess the relationship building skills needed in order to get things done for the people of Connecticut.
