Diabetic Dog Rescued On Island In Middletown
After a frantic search for Sophie, an American Eskimo in need of medication, she was reunited with her family following a rescue operation.
MIDDLETOWN, CT — A frantic search for a missing diabetic dog in need of her medication, turned into an emergency rescue operation on an island in a flooded river in Middletown.
The search for Sophie the American Eskimo spread on social media Thursday with her family desperately trying to locate her after she went missing from her home on East Main Street. The family believes that Sophie was stolen from the home.
In a message that was shared both by Middletown Police and the Animal Control, the family said that Sophie is diabetic and was in of insulin twice per day along with her thyroid medication twice per day. The family also said Sophie is blind.

In a Thursday afternoon update, family said Sophie was found stranded on an island in a flooding river. She was located by an animal control officer and rescued by firefighters.

"Firefighter Jason Hurlbut was able to assist the dog, 'Sophie', onto a rescue sled and get her safely to shore," according to a post on the South Fire District's Facebook page. "Needless to say, Sophie was happy to be out of the cold rain and back with her owners! Nice job Jason!"

The family reported on Thursday evening that Sophie was safe and sound in her comfy bed.
