Ex-Spouses Swap Words, Slap at Elementary School Orientation: Police

A Middletown woman admitted to slapping her ex-husband after he allegedly called her a derogatory term, police said.

During an Aug. 25 school orientation event for incoming students at Spencer Elementary School in Middletown, an ex-husband and ex-wife allegedly exchanged a derogatory word and a slap.

The two were each issued a misdemeanor summons complaint for disorderly conduct and an Aug. 26 court date.

According to Middletown Police Officer Matthew Freiman, the two people involved were 37-year-old Middletown resident Jaime Carle and 39-year-old Meriden resident John Carle.

When Freiman arrived at the school, John told police Jaime had left the scene after engaging in a verbal and physical altercation inside Spencer School.

He alleged that Jaime punched him in the face and spit on him, while their children were present.

John declined medical attention and Freiman said no evidence of physical injury was present.

“I also observed nothing resembling phlegm or spit on the victim’s person, and he stated that he had wiped off the spit prior to police arrival,” Freiman said.

A partial witness to the alleged incident confirmed seeing the two involved in a verbal altercation inside the school.

Police conducted an in-person interview with Jaime and said she confessed to slapping John in front of their children after he allegedly called her a derogatory term.

She denied spitting on him and said she did not punch John with a closed fist.

Freiman said Jaime thanked the police and apologized.

Police conducted a check on both parties involved. Jaime did not have prior arrests noted. John had three total arrests but none were domestic-related, according to police.
