President James Monroe traveling exhibit From June 1st –25th
At Middletown's Municipal Building

The Middlesex County Historical Society is sponsoring local institution of a traveling exhibit about President James Monroe’s tour of the northern states two hundred years ago.
President Monroe visited Middletown on June 23, 1817 in a tour that sparked the phrase, “The Era of Good Feelings.” The local paper reported that he was escorted from Durham by local dignitaries and cavalry, and as he approached the city, his arrival was announced by the firing of 19 guns. He exited his carriage and rode on horseback, amid throngs of spectators, another 19-gun salute, the ringing of bells, and the display of flags. After breakfast, he visited the factories of Simeon North, Nathan Starr, and Robert Johnson, the manufacturers of pistols, swords, and rifles for the United States Government. From Middletown, he proceeded to Wethersfield.
The exhibit is on display in the lobby of Middletown’s Municipal Building from June 1 – 25 before traveling to Staten Island. Middletown is mentioned on the Connecticut panel of the exhibit.
