Push To Rename School Moves Forward In Middletown: Report
Middletown is considering changing a school's name in honor of anti-slavery activists, according to a report.
MIDDLETOWN, CT — The proposal to rename the new combined Woodrow Wilson Middle School in honor of a family that was crucial to the city’s anti-slavery movement was sent to the Common Council following a 3-0 vote by the Public Works Commission this week, according to the Middletown Press.
The Press reports supporters are calling on the city to remove the name of former President Woodrow Wilson from the school. Several institutions across the nation named after Wilson have been urged in recent years to change their names due to his segregationist policies.
Supporters want the city to rename the new school as Beman Middle School in honor of a family that was crucial to the city’s anti-slavery movement and participated in the Underground Railroad, according to the Press. The council will hold two public hearings on the proposal before an expected vote in August.
