WHAT: Through funding from the Liberty Bank Foundation and the work of the Bristol Early Childhood Alliance, healthcare providers at Pediatric Care Center are now sending families home from check-ups with free books and a very important prescription – “read aloud to your children.” Liberty Bank will visit the Pediatric Care Center to support this message by reading to a group of young patients. Pediatric Care Center is also the recipient of a brand new bookcase donated from Bob’s Discount Furniture.

Pediatric Care Center now participates in Reach Out and Read, a program that prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by training doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at well-child visits from 6 months through 5 years.

Through Reach Out and Read, each child starts kindergarten with a home library of approximately 10 new, carefully chosen books and a parent who has heard at every well-child visit about the importance of books and reading.

Pediatric Care Center is one of 71 Reach Out and Read programs in the state. They provide the Reach Out and Read model to 110 children and families each year. Reach Out and Read reaches nearly 40,000 children and families in Connecticut annually.

Nationally, Reach Out and Read doctors and nurses distribute over 6.5 million books to more than 4 million children and their families annually at 5,000 pediatric practices, hospitals, clinics and health centers in all 50 states.
