Reported Suicide On Arrigoni Bridge Investigated: State Police
Authorities are investigating a reported suicide involving a gun that shut down the Arrigoni Bridge for several hours late Wednesday night.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Authorities are investigating a reported suicide involving a gun on the Arrigoni Bridge late Wednesday night in Portland, according to state police. The Arrigoni Bridge was closed to all traffic during the investigation but has since reopened. Emergency crews were searching the Connecticut River late Wednesday night for a person but the search was called off due to weather conditions.
The Arrigoni Bridge and both the westbound side and eastbound side of Route 66 were closed at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday night as emergency crews responded to the scene. (To sign up for Middletown breaking news alerts and more, click here.)
At around 11 p.m., the Middletown’s State’s Attorney’s Office requested the Eastern District Major Crime Squad (EDMC) to investigate a reported suicide involving a firearm on the Arrigoni Bridge in Portland, according to Connecticut State Police Sgt. Eric J Haglund. EDMC's Crime Scene Van responded to process the scene.

“The male victim's body was reported to have fallen from the bridge into the Connecticut River,” Haglund said in a press release. “The Middletown Police Dive Team, Middletown Fire Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard attempted to locate the victim, however, poor weather conditions hampered those efforts and the male victim was not located.”
Haglund said the search for the victim was expected to resume on Thursday morning. The victim’s identity is being withheld at this time.

The case remains under investigation by the Connecticut State Police Major Crime Squad with assistance from the Portland and Middletown police departments.
