Restaurant to Close After 80 Years in Business in Middletown

The restaurant will close at the end of February.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — After 80 years in business, family-operated Cypress Restaurant on South Main Street in Middletown will close its doors on Feb. 26 and 69-year-old identical twins Joe and Jim Carta will say goodbye to the business they have spent their entire lives in, according to the Hartford Courant.

The Courant reports the brothers have decided to retire and close the restaurant that was opened by their parents, James and Rose Carta, in 1936 as a 24-hour stop for travelers.

The central theme for the restaurant throughout the years has been family.

“We invite you to relax ... make yourself at home ... and enjoy our home-style cooking, served to you in our cozy, informal atmosphere,” reads the message that greets visitors to the restaurant’s website. “The friendly little family restaurant, next to the pond, on Route 17 in Middletown. Since 1936, thousands of travelers and local residents have known about good food and good value of the Cypress.

“We hope to see you soon and let you in on the secret.”

The Carta brothers have sold the business to Fred Marcantonio, who plans to open a Sliders Grill & Bar at the location, according to NBC Connecticut. It will be the sixth Sliders location in Connecticut.
