Each Life Touches So Many Others: Caring as a Community Goes Even Farther!
I watched It's a Wonderful Life last weekend. George Bailey, seemingly up against the world, was trying to do what's right. He was tempted to throw in the towel, but then he found his neighbors ready to stand up to greed, shout out for the powerless, and protect the vulnerable. The good news is that a community of caring people can win!
I've seen that time after time at St. Vincent de Paul Middletown. We've been able to do what we do because of our caring community of partners, donors, volunteers and friends.
We've been able to make sure:
- Folks have a warm place to go on a freezing cold night at the Middletown Warming Center, administered by SVDM.
- Breakfast is served on Sunday mornings at the Soup Kitchen. Church partners open and serve hot breakfast in our dining room when there is nowhere else to go.
- Many chronically homeless people have moved into their own apartments. They stay housed with the help of our supportive housing team.
- Families in crisis can avoid eviction or loss of utilities. They are connected to funds and services.
- Homeless folks can be heard by legislators. They won't be ignored.
- 1,000 families receive groceries every month through Amazing Grace Food Pantry. They won't have to choose between buying food and paying a bill.
- Over 84,000 meals are served each year in our soup kitchen. It is a community dining room and many folks are linked to services to overcome challenges.
