Bill Halting $10 Million Controversial Silver Sands Project Falters

BREAKING: Milford lawmakers say they will continue to work with the DEEP officials to address residents concerns.

MILFORD, CT — State Rep. Kim Rose (D-Milford) announced House passage, after negotiating a bi-partisan compromise, of Senate Bill 605, which would put a controversial construction project at Silver Sands on hold for at least two years. But the State Senate did not approve the bill, which means the controversial $10 million Silver Sands project can still proceed.

"We have been working on addressing this controversial proposed development for some time and I am very pleased we were able to pass this bill in the House," Rep. Rose said in a statement. "Although the bill fell short in the Senate, I have a commitment from DEEP to continue discussions to address constituent’s concerns about this project that is detrimental to the quality of life in our neighborhoods."

The Silver Sands proposal, which is currently estimated to cost $10 million, includes plans for a concession stand, storage building, bath house, guard house and ticket booth. Many Milford residents are concerned the project is based on an outdated Environmental Impact Evaluation and may be underestimating the damage the construction project will have on local plants and wildlife, Rose said in a news release.

Senate Bill #605 would prevent the project from moving forward unless it receives municipal approval.

Rose is serving her fourth legislative term. She is co-chair of the Women’s Caucus, House vice chair of the legislature’s Housing Committee, Assistant Majority Whip and a member of the Internship and Veterans Affairs Committees.
