City Of Milford Embarks On Food Scrap Collection Program
The voluntary program allows residents to drop off organic waste that will be repurposed for composting.

MILFORD, CT — The City of Milford has started a new program to help residents dispose of organic waste/food scraps at the Milford Transfer Station. The city has an agreement with Curbside Compost to dispose of the collected organic waste.
The collected material will be repurposed for composting and in some cases, converted into energy, according to a statement from the city.
This voluntary program is open to all Milford residents and will help to reduce the city’s trash disposal costs and promote sustainable trash disposal practices.

Accepted items include fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, and meat and poultry.
“The food scrap collection program is an innovative approach to address the rising costs of trash disposal, which will not only reduce costs for Milford taxpayers, but it will promote sustainable disposal practices within the community. I’m grateful to our Public Works team for all their efforts in making this green program a reality,” Mayor Anthony S. Giannattasio said in a statement.

Milford residents can drop off collected food waste at the disposal totes located in the rear of the Transfer Station. Optional collection buckets and bags are available for purchase from the Milford Department of Public Works.
Thousands of tons of food are thrown out in the weekly trash each year. By removing these items from the regular trash stream, "we are able to make our community more efficient when it comes to trash disposal and can even reduce city operating costs," according to the statement.
