A skimmer is an illegal device criminals attach to card readers to capture and steal data from the magnetic strips on cards. Most skimmers fit over card readers but those at fuel pumps are usually attached to a machine’s internal wiring.

A Big Y spokesperson told NBC CT that they are actively investigating the incident along with police. The company has inspected all its terminals and will continue to do so.
