CT Weather: 2-Day Storm To Bring Rain, Ice And Snow

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for portions of the state as a storm is forecast later this week.

CONNECTICUT — It looks like our next storm chance is really a two-day event that will first bring rain, then ice, and possibly a little snow to Connecticut.

The precipitation is scheduled to arrive on Thursday and continue through much of Friday. Areas along the Interstate 95 corridor would remain rain for the longest period of time, but may switch to sleet and freezing rain on Friday.

Areas inland in southern Connecticut and in northern Connecticut would see a greater period of ice and some snow from this storm.

The National Weather Service has already posted a hazardous weather outlook for Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties.

"Rain is expected to change to sleet and snow Friday from north to south. A couple of inches of snow and sleet accumulation is possible in northern Massachusetts with an inch or less elsewhere," the weather service said concerning northern sections of the state. "Winter Weather Advisories may need to be issued later this week for minor travel impacts due to slippery roads."

For southern Connecticut, the weather service said, rain becomes likely Thursday into Thursday night as the cold front moves closer to the region.

"The front eventually move across Friday with precipitation also behind the front, bringing a wintry mix from north to south," the weather service said concerning southern Connecticut. "The wintry mix progresses northwest to southeast Friday into Friday night with cold air advection in the low levels increasing on the increasing northerly flow behind the front."

The biggest question is how much ice or plain rain will the state see, and computer models, just like last week, are showing differing outcomes, the weather service said. Some models show cooler air prevailing, which would lead to more ice, while others show more plain rain than anything else.

"It appears at the moment that most of the wintry mix precipitation would be across more interior locations but there is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast and changes in timing of precipitation and evolution of thermal profiles could make for substantial changes in subsequent forecasts."

And in Litchfield County, the weather service said in a hazardous weather outlook, "Wintry precipitation including snow, sleet and freezing rain are possible Thursday into Friday with a slow moving front and low pressure system moving along it....Winter Weather headlines will likely be needed later in time."
