Police received a call from the Mayflower Motel on Woodmont Road at 11:06 a.m. Wednesday reporting that cleaning staff had found an unresponsive infant lying in the bathtub of a vacant room.

Officers performed CPR on the infant until paramedics arrived and took over life-saving measures.

The infant was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and declared dead at 11:56 a.m.

A police investigation found that Kirkland had been renting a room at the hotel and checked out Wednesday morning. Police believe Kirkland arrived at the motel with the infant Tuesday evening and checked out, leaving the infant behind.
