Milford Residents Object to Proposed Affordable Housing Development

The planned complex is slated for Seaside Avenue.

MILFORD, CT - Several residents voiced their objections this week to a proposed nine-unit affordable housing development slated for Seaside Avenue.

A total of 22 residents spoke out against the project during a Tuesday Planning and Zoning Commission public hearing, mainly objecting to the density of the proposal and increased traffic it might generate in the area, reports the Milford Mirror.

“There is a trend of accidents at this location,” said Seaside Avenue resident Walter Ortoleva, as reported by the Mirror. “You cannot see how the road curves when you head north on Seaside Avenue.”

The plan, which calls for the construction of the nine homes on a 1-acre parcel, is being proposed by a Georgia resident named Eugenia Debowski, who owns the adjacent properties where the project would be built. Her attorney, Christopher Cody, told the commission that the development would provide Debowski with rental income because she had suffered a stroke.

Debowski is proposing the project under the state's controversial 8-30g affordable housing law, which allows such projects to circumvent local zoning laws. Tuesday's public hearing was continued to a later date.
