New Details In Milford House Fire Released
The house incurred major damage as the fire spread from the basement to the upper levels, a fire official said.

MILFORD, CT — A smoke detector helped a family of four and their German Shepherd help escape a fire on Father's Day morning, according to Milford fire Battalion Chief Thomas Thornberg.
Firefighters were called to the residence at 12 Andrus Dr. at about 9 a.m. The fire began in the basement. When crews arrived they found "heavy smoke pushing out of every window in the 2 ½ story family dwelling," Thornberg said.
Firefighters confirmed everyone made it out the home safe, Thornberg said. There was heavy fire in the basement and it extended up into the first- and second-floor living spaces due to an open door in the basement, Thornberg said. This allowed the fire to travel throughout the dwelling except for an in-law apartment, which had a closed door to the rest of the residence, Thornberg said.

There were no injuries. Four engines, two ladder trucks, a medic unit, and the shift commander responded. The fire is under investigation.
Thornberg said closing doors during a fire can make a big difference.

"This will keep the fire contained in the room of origin and preventing fresh air and oxygen to feed the fire accelerating its growth," he said.
