'Operation Shop And Drop' To Help Milford's Unsheltered Residents During Extreme Cold

Almost 50 people are temporarily housed in local motels amid extended below-freezing temperatures, with volunteers needed to deliver meals.

MILFORD, CT — With the state facing a stretch of bitter cold weather following a large winter storm, those who are homeless or experiencing housing insecurity are currently sheltering in hotels. These people are "facing an urgent need for food as they navigate this extremely difficult part of the year," according to a statement.

The Beth-El Center and Milford neighbors are for a “Shop and Drop” program to provide daily meals to 45 individuals currently housed in local motels. The Beth-El Center is funding the program.

“Even as these folks are now safe from the worst cold, they are facing significant new challenges in other areas,” Kaylyn Crawford, who is coordinating the program, said in a statement. “With the limited facilities of a motel room, as they continue to face difficulties in getting to work or to medical appointments, ready-made meals are an absolute godsend in this difficult time.”

Volunteers will need to pick up grocery store gift cards and shopping lists at the Beth El Center in Milford between noon and 2 p.m. on the day they sign up for, aiming to pick up 15 ready-made or easily prepared meals for two to three families currently sheltering in a local hotel and delivering before 5 p.m.

The program is scheduled to run through Tuesday, Feb. 3., but could be extended if freezing conditions persist.

“The most vulnerable members of our community are always the ones who face the greatest dangers and difficulties in extreme conditions like this,” said Crawford. “We want to be the kind of neighbors–and the kind of city–that will support them during these times.”
