📰 News we're reading

• Milford Board of Aldermen pause speed camera, license plate readers (westfaironline.com) — Milford's Board of Aldermen has voted 9-5 to pause use and new installation of school-zone speed cameras and Flock license plate readers while a new review committee studies their impact, locations, fines, and privacy safeguards. Mayor Richard Smith's plan keeps some ALPRs only at city entry points during the moratorium, responding to weeks of resident concerns about surveillance, fairness of tickets, and how the technology should be used on local roads and near schools.

• Connecticut gets $10M from federal government to improve literacy (rep-am.com) — Connecticut has secured a $10 million federal grant to boost early-grade reading, funding more small‑group instruction time, teacher coaching, and better literacy assessments over the next five years. While the announcement highlights a Milford classroom at Live Oaks School, the expanded support will roll out to selected schools statewide, aiming to lift K‑3 reading proficiency that still lags pre‑pandemic levels.

• How Lamont and Fazio would tackle Connecticut's housing costs (milfordmirror.com) — Connecticut's race for governor is centering on how to tackle soaring housing costs, with Gov. Ned Lamont and Sen. Ryan Fazio offering sharply different statewide plans. Fazio recently highlighted his approach after a housing-policy roundtable in Milford, contrasting Lamont's transit-oriented building and state incentives with his own emphasis on municipal zoning control, property tax caps, and more competitive, repayable state housing loans.
