Viability Of Milford's Largest Taxpayer Under 'Serious Threat'

It's back to the drawing board for the owners of the state's largest mall and current largest taxpayer in Milford.

The Planning and Zoning Board rejected its application for a regulation change, which if approved would have paved the way for a $75 million luxury apartment complex on the site of the state's largest mall.

MILFORD, CT — It's back to the drawing board for the owners of the Connecticut Post Mall. The Planning and Zoning Board rejected its application for a regulation change, which if approved, would have paved the way for a $75 million luxury apartment complex on the site of the state's largest mall at 1201 Boston Post Road.

The PZB voted 5 to 3 against approving the regulation change Tuesday night. City officials including the Mayor's office opposed the residential plans.

After the vote, mall owners released a statement to Patch.

“Centennial is disappointed in the Planning & Zoning Board’s rejection of our proposal to invest more than $70 million in Milford," said Jon Meshel SVP, Development for Centennial. "Unfortunately, the viability of Connecticut Post Mall and its status as the city’s largest taxpayer remain under serious threat. We will continue to evaluate our options for the property."

Mall officials didn't say what plan B might be. Prior to the vote, mall officials said that their only path forward was approval for their residential development due to the rapid decline of retail across the country.
