A Student's Perspective

To put it plainly, what you will read here is a distilled version of what being a student growing up in Monroe is really like. For better or for worse ...

As an avid reader of Monroe Patch, I've always found an interest in reading the coverage and comments on the state of our public schooling here in Monroe. Between arguments over the district's fiscal budget and how important this program is and that teacher is, I find myself always thinking about how one-sided the debate is. No, I don't mean one-sided based upon the arguments that are made, but rather by who is making the arguments. Truth be known, you seldom hear a high school or middle school student make a comment or share an opinion on Patch about the issues being debated in our community, and to be fair, most kids my age aren't going home and thinking about the next round of budget cuts in their free time. However, that isn't to say that kids my age don't have an opinion to express, or an experience to share, or an idea to throw in.

We students may not know all of the in's and out's of fiscal management or educational law, but what we do know about is what we experience each and every day: the public education graciously provided to us. While teachers, parents, and town residents each view the education of Monroe's students from a different perspective, students have a truly unique point of view, and that is what this blog will be about; a student's perspective. However, there is a catch.

As I said earlier, I read Patch quite often, and if there is one lesson I have learned from reading all of the posts, it's that no matter what opinion is argued, no change is made in any other person's opinion. For this reason, this blog will not be written to sway anyone's opinion. The only purpose will be to share opinions, stories, and experiences from the point of view of a Monroe Public School student.

These experiences also will not always be my own. This blog will be as diverse and open as possible, with all different types of students providing their experiences and opinions. Also, what you read here won't always be a running diatribe on the issues. Instead, most of the time you'll be reading entries focused on things like what it's like to run a regular schedule as a Masuk student, or what Prom night was like just this past weekend.

To put it plainly, what you will read here is a distilled version of what being a student growing up in Monroe is really like. For better or for worse, I hope you enjoy reading and comparing your experiences! I look forward to sharing some experiences with you all!
