My Political Journey Thus Far

The partisanship has been spreading like a mortal disease. This needs to end now.

My love for politics and public service has not developed on a path of normalcy. I was accepted early decision to Cornell University with an intended major of Atmospheric Sciences. Upon arrival to Cornell, I quickly realized this was not the University for me and returned home. I just as quickly enrolled at Sacred Heart University with an intended BS in Mathematics.

During my first semester at SHU — Fall 2008 — I enrolled in Intro to American Government with Dr. Gary Rose. This of course was during the time of the 2008 Presidential Election. Dr. Rose's class awakened in me an intellect and passion for government that — up until then — I did not know existed. I quickly declared a double major and continued my studies at SHU.

As I was planning my last semester at Sacred Heart, I decided that learning about government in the classroom is great and all, but I wanted hands-on experience; I became an intern for State Representative Christopher Lyddy (D-Newtown).

My time as an intern at the State Capitol was indescribable. Standing on the floor of the Connecticut House of Representatives and watching the legislators at work and voting was one of the best experiences of my life. I can honestly say that I loved every minute of it and appreciate Rep. Lyddy and his aide's hospitality.

Also, fielding some phone calls and helping Newtown constituents was another large task. To be able to assist someone with a tax issue or brainstorm with the Representative and his aide as to the best way to keep the Horse Guard fully functional in Newtown and to just in general make a difference in the life of someone was a truly fulfilling experience.

This inspired me to run for office in Monroe. To be able to help the residents of Monroe with anything they need while also making a difference through ordinances and other legislative mechanisms to help Monroe is my goal.

However, there is one major problem with all of this — politics. Unfortunately, observing at the Capitol in Hartford, the Democrats and Republicans are not only not on the same page, but in completely different books. More recently, in our own Town of Monroe, the partisanship has been spreading like a mortal disease. This needs to end now. No matter which party is in control, members of local, state and federal legislative bodies need to reach across the aisle to produce fair, effective and wise legislation.

If elected as a Monroe Town Councilman, I will work with ALL members of town government to do what is best for Monroe. I am a resident of the United States, a resident of Monroe, Connecticut and I am a Democrat — specifically in that order.  Political party above Town does not do anyone good and cannot stand. It is time to Move Monroe Forward.
